“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.”

As a child, I wondered why Jesus’ death on the cross was called “Good Friday.” I didn’t understand it then, but now I know there is bad news and good news. The bad news is hell is real, and Jesus said more people are on the road that leads to hell, than to heaven (Matthew 7:13-14). If sin, death, judgment, and people suffering in hell is not real, then there is no need for a divine rescue. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 is God’s rescue plan through Jesus Christ. Here are six reasons why Jesus’ death on the cross on Friday is good news. Or, as Christians call it; “Good Friday.”
First, there is great hope for every person. The Apostle Paul received this message of the gospel as it is stated in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 and is now passing the good news on to others. Paul was a Christian-hater and murder (1 Corinthians 15:9). If God can save and use someone like Paul, there is great hope for every person. Through Jesus Christ, any sinner can be forgiven. Christ’s work on the cross provided forgiveness to any and every sinner. Therefore, Christians call this Good Friday.
Second, Jesus Christ, God’s perfect Son died to pay our death penalty. God is so serious about our moral crimes, that every sinner must die (Romans 6:23). Therefore, the only one to pay our debt is someone without sin, perfect, and willing to die our death. This is none other than our great God and savior, Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13). Therefore, Christians call this Good Friday.
Third, if we could be good enough to go to heaven, then why did Jesus die for our sins (Galatians 2:21)? Either, we are good enough and don’t need Jesus, or, we are dreadful sinners and need a Savior. It can’t be both ways. Jesus’ death on the cross showed the world no one can be good enough to get into heaven. The cross was a reality check. Therefore, Christians call this Good Friday.
Fourth, it was according to the Scriptures. The authority of the gospel is not the Protestant church or The Catholic church, but the Word of God. Namely, Isaiah 53 predicting all this would take place. The scriptures were fulfilled the day Jesus died for our sins proving the Word of God is true. Therefore, Christians call this Good Friday.
Fifth, Jesus was buried and rose from the dead on the third day. Sinners die and stay dead for what they have done. Jesus’ resurrection was proof He didn’t deserve to die. His death was for the payment for others, not for Himself. Also, it proves Jesus is everything He said He is…the very Son of God (Romans 1:4). Therefore, Christians call this Good Friday.
Sixth, there is one way to heaven. In all other religions, the person is responsible to save himself by their good works. In the gospel, Jesus does all the saving. No sin past, present or future is left unpaid for. The debt is paid. A pardon is available for all who believe. This is good news. Therefore, Christians call this Good Friday.
So, what is the proper response in all that Jesus has done? Believe that no good works, good effort, or religious effort can save you. Trust in Jesus today to be your Savior. Call on Him today to come into your life and save you (Acts 16:31, Romans 10:13).
